It s best to to wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows for easy access to the areas being massaged. Think athletic wear like shorts and a t-shirt, allowing for movement and accessibility during the massage. For women a sports bra or a soft, wireless bra are often recommended. Ultimately, the most important factor is comfort and ensuring the therapist can access the areas you want massaged.
Massage therapy offers a wide range of benefits, including stress reduction, pain relief, improved circulation, and enhanced flexibility. It can also boost mental well-being by reducing anxiety and depression. Regular massage can improve sleep quality, increase relaxation and contribute to overall physical and mental wellness.
In reality there is significant cross over between the two. Once the clients needs are known, the treatment will be specifically tailored to address them.
Techniques: Both employ slow, deep strokes and sustained pressure, potentially using hands, forearms, or elbows. Deep tissue massage tends to be performed on the whole body. Sports massage, on the other hand, is more targeted, focusing on specific areas of pain or injury.
Deep tissue massage focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is beneficial for chronic aches and pains, muscle stiffness, and injuries. The technique involves applying firm pressure and slow strokes to release tension and break up adhesions and scar tissue. While it can be more intense than other types of massage, it should never be forceful.
A specialised form of massage therapy not just for athletes. It can work for all physically active individuals struggling with specific aches and pains. These may be one off injuries, chronic pain from repeated movements or poor posture. It focuses on the soft tissues of the body, including muscles, tendons and ligaments.
Techniques: Soft tissue release, deep tissue manipulation, trigger point therapy, stretching techniques and targeted pressure.
A sports massage therapy consultation includes the above but is a more comprehensive assessment of your current condition, including a verbal, visual, and physical evaluation of any injuries or areas of concern. This can include postural analysis, range of movement and functional testing. The consultation also involves gathering information about your medical history, exercise routine, and any relevant health issues or allergies. This information helps tailor a treatment plan and determine if sports massage is appropriate for your needs.
